Tuberculosis is a chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacteria. Tuberculosis is very dangerous, because in most cases it affects the lungs, a vital human organ. So far, it has not been defeated: the disease is among the top ten causes of death and is the leader among infectious diseases in terms of the number of deaths from one infectious agent, overtaking HIV (Fig. 1). In 2018, about 10 million people fell ill with it in the world, and about 1.5 million more died. In total, over the past 100 years, tuberculosis has claimed the lives of about 100 million people.
